Turning Personal Experiences into Positive Change
For many people, myocarditis is a condition they have never heard of until it changes their life forever.
This month, three very different fundraising efforts are helping to shine a light on the condition and support the work of Myocarditis UK. Behind each challenge is a personal story of loss, recovery or community spirit, demonstrating the many ways people are helping to make a difference.
Running in Memory of a Sister
On 21 June, Andrew Harrowell will lace up his running shoes and take on a half marathon. While thousands of people across the country participate in running events every year, Andrew’s motivation is deeply personal.
He is running in memory of his sister, who died from myocarditis in 2019.
For Andrew, every mile is an opportunity to honour her memory while helping others learn more about a condition that can affect people of all ages and often arrives without warning.
His fundraising efforts will support Myocarditis UK’s work to raise awareness, provide information to patients and families, and fund research into the condition.
While no challenge can erase the loss of a loved one, Andrew’s determination is helping to create something positive from tragedy and ensuring his sister’s legacy continues to make a difference.
A Second Chance Inspires a New Challenge
For Emil, the story could have been very different.
At just 25 years old, he became seriously ill with myocarditis. What followed was a frightening and uncertain period as he faced the reality of a condition that affects the heart and can have life-changing consequences.
Today, Emil has made a full recovery.
Rather than putting the experience behind him, he has chosen to use it as motivation to help others. Through a fundraising baton relay challenge, he is raising money for Myocarditis UK while sharing his story with others who may never have heard of the condition.
His experience highlights an important message: although myocarditis can be serious, recovery is possible. For many patients and families facing a diagnosis, stories like Emil’s provide reassurance, hope and encouragement.
His fundraising efforts are being further supported through match funding from his employer, NatWest, helping every donation go even further.
Community Spirit Takes to the Water
While Andrew and Emil’s fundraising journeys are rooted in personal experiences, another June fundraiser demonstrates the power of collective action.
The Jansons Rowing Cup has become a valued fixture in the Myocarditis UK fundraising calendar, bringing together businesses, supporters and local communities through sport.
The event is about much more than competition. It creates an opportunity for people to come together, learn more about myocarditis and support the charity’s work in a tangible way.
Events like the Rowing Cup play a vital role in building awareness while generating funds that help support research and patient services. They also demonstrate how businesses and communities can work together to support causes that matter.
Different Journeys, Shared Purpose
Although their stories are very different, Andrew, Emil and the participants in the Jansons Rowing Cup are united by a common desire to make a positive impact.
One is running in memory of a loved one. One is celebrating recovery and giving back. Others are coming together through teamwork and community spirit.
Together, they represent the many faces of fundraising and the powerful role that personal experiences can play in driving awareness and change.
Every pound raised helps Myocarditis UK continue its mission to improve understanding of myocarditis, support those affected by the condition and fund research that could help save lives in the future.
As these fundraisers take on their challenges throughout June, they are not only raising money. They are helping to ensure that more people recognise the signs of myocarditis, more families receive support when they need it most, and more stories of hope can be written in the years to come.
Myocarditis UK would like to thank Andrew, Emil, Jansons Property and everyone who has donated, fundraised or supported these initiatives. Their commitment is helping to turn personal experiences into positive change.
